A letter from the you who already made it through

Hey there, Reader!

Have you ever wished someone could just look you in the eyes and say, “It’s going to be okay”?

That you’re not behind.

That your dreams aren’t too much.

That it’s not too late to start over.

That you’re not wrong for needing rest or a complete reinvention.

What if that someone was you?

This week on Better Day Start Today, I’m sharing one of my favorite reflective practices, a letter from your future self. It’s simple, it’s powerful, and yes, it might feel a little “woo woo” at first. But stay with me.

The version of you who’s already made it through this season of life exists. The one who took the risk. Made the shift. Felt like a beginner again. Maybe even failed, then figured it out anyway. That future self has some wisdom for you, right now.

This journaling practice helps you hear her voice.

Here’s how it works:

  • Imagine a version of you in the future. I love doing it from the perspective of five years down the line. You want the version of you that knows how this season unfolds.
  • Ask: What does she want you to know? What did she stop apologizing for? What did she start doing that changed everything?
  • Write yourself a letter from her. Then read it aloud.

The insights you’ll uncover may surprise you. It’s taking a moment to reconnect with the part of you that already knows what you need next, and learning how to trust her.

If you’re in a season of doubt, transition, or longing, you don’t have to wait for clarity to magically arrive. You can borrow it from the version of you who’s already been there.

I can’t wait to hear what she has to say to you

With love,

Adrienne

P.S. After you write your letter from your future self, try uploading a photo of it into ChatGPT with this prompt:

“I'm sharing a letter I wrote from the perspective of my future self. Please reflect on the tone, themes, values, and emotional needs present in the letter. What might this tell me about what matters most to me right now, and what I may be craving or avoiding?”

You can also ask:

  • What strengths or values are revealed in this letter?
  • What does this say about what I want to believe is possible?
  • What does my future self seem to need me to hear most right now?

Let it be a dialogue. You might be surprised by what rises to the surface!
